Types of rank tracking tools

Over the years, various types of keyword rank tracking tools have been invented to help with the tracking of keywords on various platforms. In this article, I am going to look at three main types of rank tracking tools that I feel you should know about. These rank tracking tools are classified based on how they are installed. The three types of tools are web browser plugins, desktop applications, and web-based SaaS applications. I will be looking at each of these three types of rank tracking tools along with their pros and cons.

Web browser plugins

Browser plugins can be defined as add-on tools or software that are usually added on a browser to extend its capabilities. Plugins are usually downloaded from the internet separately and then installed. Various browsers come with their own rank tracking tools. There are a few pros and cons associated with using browser plugins to track the ranking of your keywords.

The first advantage that is associated with using a plugin is that it is capable of masking the scraping tool as a web browser. Google doesn’t like rank tracking tools and if it identifies one, it blocks the ID address it is originating from. However, if Google tries to identify the user-agent of the plugin, it will appear as a browser and not a scraping script. Another advantage that is associated with plugins is that they produce results immediately and won’t make you wait for too long.

The shortcoming of using plugins is that even though plugins may produce the user-agent as a browser, the speed and behavior of the queries generated by the plugin appear abnormal. Thus, running a huge number of keywords will still get your plugin blocked from the search engine. Plugins should therefore be used for a small set of keywords.

Desktop applications

Desktop applications are standalone programs that you install on your computer and don’t rely on browsers to work. You can use these applications to run a bigger number of keywords without being detected by Google. These applications achieve this by emulating human behavior where they add time and pauses between queries. Secondly, they may use a rotating list of IP addresses so that it looks like the queries originate from different computers around the world

The main shortcoming of desktop applications is that they can be very expensive, especially if you have to obtain new IP addresses only for purposes of rank tracking.

Web-based SaaS solutions

Web-based software usually runs on servers that you pay for as a service to run the software. With these applications, you don’t have to worry about obtaining multiple IP addresses. These solutions provide more stability, need less maintenance, and take care of IP rotating for you as the client. Web-based tools can track local as well as global results in different countries. This helps businesses to track ranking in target markets.

The main shortcoming associated with web-based tools is that they cost more than the first two solutions. Thus, you should only use this option if you are a big digital marketing agency. Otherwise, stick to free website rank checker keyword.
